Charlotte and David Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic at Waveny Care Center and will be conducting geriatric assessments and ongoing management on-site.

New Canaan - Neuropsychologist Dr. Robert Tepley has been appointed to practice at the Drs. Charlotte and David Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic at Waveny Care Center and will be conducting geriatric assessments and ongoing management on-site.

Available on an outpatient basis, The Drs. Charlotte & David Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic at Waveny Care Center was established in 1998 to address common – but often complex – medical issues in adults, especially memory loss, and welcomes adults from all communities.

Dr. Tepley specializes in neuropsychological evaluation and treatment of cognitive impairment, dementia, medically unexplained symptoms and illnesses, developmental and learning disabilities, traumatic brain injury, and chronic pain syndromes.

Through Waveny’s Clinic, Tepley will provide comprehensive neuropsychological assessments individually tailored to review each patient’s cognitive, psychological, social, medical, functional and caregiver status. Following a geriatric evaluation, his professional recommendations coupled with the development of an individualized care plan can assist patients and their families in making appropriate short- and long-term healthcare decisions that may help improve personal function and manage geriatric conditions that can interfere with quality of life.

“I am extremely pleased to have Dr. Tepley on board and regularly seeing patients,” said Heather Neff, Chief Executive Officer of Waveny Care Network. “The wealth of clinical expertise he brings to Waveny will be a tremendous asset to our organization, and we are proud to offer his services to adults from all areas, through the Clinic.”

Dr. Tepley is the founder of Neuropsychology Consultants, LCC, a private group practice founded in 2002, and is appointed to the allied health medical staff at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Conn. He received his doctorate in psychology from the University of Texas at Austin, completed his internship in neuropsychology at Edith Norse Rogers Memorial Hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts, and completed postdoctoral residence training in Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology atNorwalk Hospital. He also is a trained marriage and family therapist, earning a Master of Arts degree in Human Development and Family Relations from the University of Connecticut, School of Family Studies.

Dr. Tepley has presented to physician groups, hospital staffs, and at regional and national professional conferences on various topics, including neuropsychological evaluation of mild cognitive impairment and dementia, neuropsychological aspects of medically unexplained illnesses, behavioral management of the brain injured patient, personality assessment following brain injury or illness, and the nature of traumatic memories.

“Not only will Dr. Tepley’s professional ability to evaluate and provide for the long-term management of patients with progressive memory impairment and dementia benefit the surrounding communities,” said Neff, “but it will also greatly benefit our residents and their families at The Village, Waveny’s assisted living residence for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory loss,” said Neff. “Working in conjunction with our highly skilled Geriatric Care Management team and other programs available at Waveny, we look forward to continuing to address eldercare needs throughout Fairfield County and neighboring Westchester towns through the Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic.”

For more information, or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Tepley at the Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic, please call (203) 594-5311.

New Canaan – Paddle tennis players and the general public are invited to attend a free injury prevention seminar on Tuesday, February 21 at 6:00 p.m. at The Village at Waveny Care Center, 3 Farm Road, New Canaan, Conn. Refreshments will be available from 5:45 p.m. until a prompt 6:15 p.m. start. In the event of inclement weather (corresponding withNew Canaan public school closings), a snow date will be announced.

A professional panel including orthopedic surgeon Dr. Paul Sethi, ONS physical therapist Alicia Hirscht and Paddle Professional, Patrick Hirscht will present “Paddle Tennis Injury Prevention,” a seminar on common injuries among paddle or “platform tennis” players and precautions that can be taken to prevent them. The seminar takes place in advance of Waveny Care Network’s 4th Annual Mixed Paddle Tournament, which will be held to benefit the non-profit organization on March 3.

Admission to the panel seminar is free, however registration is requested. To register or for more information, please contact Kim Houghton at (203) 594-5357, or KHoughton@waveny.org.

“Every sport involves a certain amount of risk for injury, and paddle tennis is no different,” says orthopedic surgeon Dr. Paul Sethi, who also serves as president of the ONS Foundation. “Paddle players do a lot of jumping, planting and twisting on a hard court surface, and they’re doing it in the cold, in sometimes very frigid temperatures. Proper warm up and conditioning are very important to prepare muscles and other soft tissue for strenuous athletic activity. Other potential injuries are rolled and sprained ankles, knee pain from running on the hard court, shoulder injuries from repetitive overheard motion and wrist strain. Proper conditioning your body for your sport can make all the difference in the world.”

Co-leaders of the Caregiver support group offered through Waveny Care Network: director of social work at Waveny Care Center, Sarah Ruggiero, MSW and director of Waveny’s Adult Day Program, Ilene Sumberg, MSW, LCSW.

New Canaan - Waveny Care Network hosts a regularly-scheduled public support group for people coping with the impact of caring for a loved one with memory loss. Held on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month in the Care Center’s library, the support group is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association of Connecticut.

Upcoming meeting dates for the group’s Winter/Spring schedule are February 14, February 28, March 13, March 27, April 10 and April 24. Meetings begin at 1:45 p.m. and last for approximately one hour.

Led by Ilene Sumberg, MSW, LCSW, director of the Adult Day Program at Waveny Care Center and Sarah Ruggiero, MSW, director of social work for Waveny Care Center, the group focuses on the enormous responsibility of caring for people with memory loss including Alzheimer’s disease, and welcomes individuals from all areas to attend.

“Our support group gives families and caregivers an opportunity to meet other people facing similar challenges,” said Sumberg. “Our sessions provide an open forum for brainstorming, problem solving, interpersonal networking, stress reduction and continued education about Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss and available community resources. Sharing openly with other individuals in similar situations can help one feel refreshed and re-energized, especially in the case of caregivers.”

In addition to giving caregivers a forum to discuss their experiences with Alzheimer’s disease, Waveny’s support group also provides its participants with an important social outlet. “Caring for a person with memory loss can take an emotional toll on the caregiver,” said Ruggiero. “Participation in a support group helps to diffuse the sense of isolation that often affects people who care for a person with Alzheimer’s or memory loss. When a caregiver takes the necessary time to attend to his or her own physical, mental and emotional well-being, the recipient of the care benefits, too.”

For more information about Waveny’s caregiver support group, please call Ilene Sumberg at 203.594.5301 or e-mail isumberg@waveny.org.

Jay Twombly, newly-elected chairman of the Board of Directors for Waveny Care Network.

New Canaan – Julian “Jay” B. Twombly has been elected to succeed Harry T. Rein as chairman of the board of directors for Waveny Care Network. Under Rein, Twombly served as board vice-chairman and an active member of Waveny’s Audit, Executive, Finance and Strategic Planning committees. Thomas Lewis and Kelley Franco have been elected board vice-chair and secretary, respectively.

“It is a privilege to have the opportunity to lead an organization that has played such a critical and positive role in healthcare for southwestern Connecticut for decades,” said Twombly. “Over the years, Waveny has developed a reputation for providing unparalleled quality care and service through a distinctively compassionate approach. It is a treasure within our community.”

Twombly, who first became involved in the Waveny organization following his mother’s short-term rehabilitation stay, says the exceptional care she received at Waveny Care Center was a key factor leading him to join the organization’s Board of Directors. “We have an outstanding staff and a very strong and capable Board of Directors – both of which I’m honored and delighted to work with.”

“I speak for our entire staff and management team in saying we are overjoyed by the enthusiasm of our 2012 Board of Directors, and delighted to have Jay as our new Chairman,” saidHeather Neff, Chief Executive Officer of Waveny Care Network. “His leadership and oversight come at a particularly pivotal time of healthcare change and challenges. We are most grateful for his dedication to Waveny and his strategic, mission-driven support.”
